Nonviral agents cause only a small part of acute bronchitis illnesses, with the most common organism being Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Study findings suggest that Chlamydia pneumoniae may be another nonviral cause of acute bronchitis. The obstructive symptoms of acute bronchitis, as determined by spirometric studies, have become similar to those of mild asthma. In one study. Forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV), mean forced expiratory flow during the midst of forced vital capacity (FEF) and peak flow values fell to less than 80 percent of the predicted values in almost 60 percent of patients during episodes of acute bronchitis.

Pneumoniae infection in adults with new-onset asthma suggest that untreated chlamydial infections may have a part in the transition from the intense inflammation of bronchitis to the long-term inflammatory changes of asthma.
