Smoking Cause Bronchitis: Marijuana Smoking Not Linked to Chronic Breathing Problems

Year Long Study Finds No Decrease in Lung Function for Occasional Marijuana Smokers Jan. 10, 2012 - Woodstock generation, breathe easy. One of the largest and longest studies to take a look at the effect of cannabis smoking on lung health finds that weed smoking does not seem to cause chronic breathing trouble. As more states legalize marijuana - the District of Columbia and 16 states allow its medical use - pros have stressed that pot smoking could also brings on the kinds of lung damage caused by cigarettes. Truly, cigarette smokers in the study saw their lung function fall substantially over 20 years. In reality, the study found the lung function of most bud smokers really improved marginally over time.

COPD Causes and Risk Factors

When you breathe in cigarette smoke, the chemicals irritate and activate certain white blood cells (macrophages) and cells that make up the lining of the airways (epithelial cells). There are numerous methods to stop smoking, including: Other reasons for COPD include: In rare cases, emphysema also can be brought on by an inherited disorder called alpha-1 antitrypsin (A1AT) deficiency, where a normally beneficial enzyme called neutrophil elastase damages alveoli tissue. For example, while smoking is the biggest cause of COPD, just about 20 percent of smokers develop COPD, suggesting that genetic factors may make some people more susceptible to the substances of cig smoke (and maybe other inhaled irritants), according to a 2014 report in the journal PLoS ONE. The study found that, in contrast to non smokers, certain airway cells in smokers abnormally exhibit a number of genes, including four genes (NFKBIB, LTBP4, EGLN2, and TGFB1) that have been previously linked to COPD.

The study - led by Cardiff University in the UK - reveals for the very first time the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) plays a key part in causing the airway disorder. Daniela Riccardi, principal investigator and a professor in Cardiff's School of Biosciences, describes their findings as "incredibly exciting," because for the first time they have linked airway inflammation - that may be activated for example by cigarette smoke and car fumes - with airway twitchiness. She adds: "Our paper shows how these triggers release compounds that activate CaSR in airway tissue and drive asthma symptoms like airway twitchiness, inflammation, and narrowing.

Prof. Riccardi concludes: The researchers believe their findings about the function of CaSR in airway tissue could have important implications for other respiratory illnesses such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis. The researchers, from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, believe their findings will lead to treatments for a range of ailments including asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis and even certain cancers.

  • Acute bronchitis is usually caused by one of several viruses that attack the bronchial tubes and can infect the respiratory tract.
  • With chronic bronchitis, the bronchial tubes remain inflamed (red and swollen), irritated, and produce excessive mucus over time.
  • Those who have chronic bronchitis are more susceptible to bacterial diseases of the airway and lungs, like pneumonia.
